Boron in Dentistry: Current and Potential Applications from a Biomedical Perspective

Abstract

Boron and boron compounds have attracted increasing interest in recent years for their applications in biomaterial development and therapeutic approaches in dentistry. The aim of this review is to evaluate experimental (in vitro and in vivo) and clinical studies on the use of boron and boron compounds in dentistry in the light of current literature. Available evidence indicates that, owing to their antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and osteogenic properties, boron compounds have potential applications particularly in implantology, restorative dentistry, periodontology, and endodontics. However, a substantial proportion of the existing literature is based on experimental studies, and further well-designed clinical investigations are required to establish long-term clinical efficacy, biocompatibility, and safety. This review aims to summarize the current applications of boron and boron compounds in dentistry within the framework of experimental and clinical evidence.
