Investigation of kinetic mechanism of colemanite in sodiumbisulfate solution

Abstract

Colemanite (2CaO.3B2O3.5H2O) is a type of boron mineral that is found in various regions of our country in excess compared to the world and at the same time has a high commercial value. In this study, the effects of solid / liquid ratio, acid concentration, particle size, mixing speed and reaction temperature parameters to the dissolution kinetics of colemanite in sodium bisulfate solution were investigated. According to the experimental results, it was determined that as the solubility of colemanite ascends with the enhancement of the temperature, it decreases with the increment of the particle size and solid/liquid ratio. Additionally, it is found that the effect of mixing speed on dissolution kinetics was positive up to 350 rpm and has negative effect at values after approximately 350 rpm. Experimental data were analyzed according to unreacted nuclei model for fixed size particles. It has been found that dissolution from the ash film is diffusion controlled in two stages. Activation energies in the first and second stages were found as 3.4 and 6.1 kJ.mol-1, respectively.
