Olive Branch Operation in Afrin and Its Impact on Syrian War
Abstract
When do states use force? What are the legitimate reasons for it? These are the basic questions of international relations and are still subject of debate. The main reason of this discussion is that use of force is a radical tool of foreign policy and it changes balance of power deeply. Especially in the Middle East region, following the uprisings in 2011, use of hard power has become a common exercise. Turkey as an important player in the region has used force in Syria by launching Euphrates Shield Operation starting on 24 August 2016 to protect its borders and to increase its role in the civil war. Once again on January 20th, 2018 Turkey initiated another military operation under the brand of “Olive Branch” “to fight against terrorism” and “to protect its border area” near in Afrin province of Syria. The consequences of this operation are beyond that reasoning and will have impact on Syrian civil war. In this article the international conjuncture of this operation enabling Turkey to act militarily and its consequences have been analyzed.
