A Digital Design Framework for Cyborg Architecture

Abstract

This paper proposes a digital design framework for cyborg architecture as an adaptive, artificial intelligence-mediated and communicative spatial system. Rather than defining cyborg architecture as a stylistic category, a futuristic image, or a simple extension of smart building technologies, the study conceptualizes it as a recursive cybernetic system composed of four operational layers-sensing, cognition, actuation, and material intelligence-framed by governance as a meta-regulatory fifth layer. The research adopts a qualitative theory-building approach based on conceptual analysis and interdisciplinary synthesis. Foundational cybernetic theory, cyborg and posthuman discourse, responsive architecture, smart building research, digital twin studies, critical data studies, and recent literature on artificial intelligence in architectural design are examined to construct the proposed framework. The paper argues that architecture becomes cyborg not through technological accumulation alone, but through the integration of human users, computational processes, responsive materials, spatial feedback, and ethical regulation. In this framework, adaptive space is understood as a communicative environment in which data, algorithms, users, materials, and institutional protocols continuously mediate one another. The contribution of the study lies not in introducing the cyborg concept into architectural discourse, but in operationalizing it as an explicit five-layer architectural and digital design model with observable indicators and boundary conditions.
