AHL-I SUNNAH AND GRAVE PUNISHMENT ACCORDING TO MU'TAZILA

Öz

Life in grave is a temporary stage that people spend between the physical and spiritual worlds after their death and has been named "grave life" or "world of Barzakh". In the Holy Qur'an, both of the words grave and Barzakh has been used. For all that, to live grave in grave, it isn't necessary for a person to be put in a grave physically, he will eventually pass this stage. As it isn't necessary for a part of body to alive or solid, people whose body was split, smashed, burnt, mingled into air even eaten by wild animals will suffer or be awarded. The main subject is not the presence of grave punishment, the subject is how it is. While some ulama claim that grave punishment will be physically some of them stated that iy should be spiritually. Besides those, it was also stated that grave punishment will be suffered both physically and spiritually. On this point, the fact how punishment of award will be of body or Nafs constitutes the main topic. According to some ulama, Almighty Allah resusciates the individual until the end of judgement, and than makes all parts of his body suffer or awards him. According to others, on the other side, all of those will be towards the human spirit and Nafs. This matter has also been point at issue among sects, evidences have been set forth and convictions have been put forth. In this article of ours, we will try to put forth the difference of ideas between Ash'ari, al-Maturidi and Mu'tazila and will try to interpret the evidences.
