Ebeveynlerin Çocuklarıyla Cinsellik Hakkında Konuşma Stratejileri ve Öz-Yeterlikleri

Year 2020, Volume: 37 Issue: 2, 37 - 57, 17.12.2020

Abstract

Parents' Speaking Strategies About Sexuality with Children and Their Self-Competence

Year 2020, Volume: 37 Issue: 2, 37 - 57, 17.12.2020

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate parents' knowledge of sexuality, their communication with their children about sexuality and their views on the content of a sexual education program. The data were collected from 230 parents who have children between the ages of 3-14. The Parenting and Child Sexuality Questionnaire was used as the data collection tool. The quantitative analyses included the descriptive statistics as well as Pearson product moment correlations and a standart multiple regression analysis. As for qualitative data analysis, content analysis was conducted. The results have shown that parents get information about sexuality from the media, the internet, their families. They talk with their children about protecting sexual areas, gender differences and changes in the body. The participants have indicated that they pay attention to the language they use and provide a proper environment in order to facilitate communication. They also prefer to speak over a visual or audio material. The participants have reported that any information on protecting the child from sexual abuse included in the curriculum of a sexual education program would be useful for them. The results are discussed in the light of the relevant literature.
