Peer-Review Process

All contributions, prepared according to the Author Guidelines and submitted via Bulletin of Biomathematics online submission system, are evaluated according to the criteria of originality and quality of their scientific content. The corresponding author will receive a confirmation e-mail with a reference number assigned to the paper, which he/she is asked to quote in all subsequent correspondence.

All submitted manuscripts are initially reviewed by the Secretary Department to ensure proper submission and the inclusion of all required information. Once this preliminary check is completed, the manuscript is assessed by the Technical Editor using plagiarism detection software (iThenticate) to verify its originality and uphold the quality of the written work. If the similarity score exceeds the acceptable threshold of 30%, the submission is rejected, and the author is duly notified.

After the plagiarism check, manuscripts are evaluated by the Editor-in-Chief. Submissions may be rejected at this stage without external review if they are deemed to lack sufficient interest or novelty, are too preliminary, or fall outside the scope of the journal. If considered suitable for further evaluation, the manuscript is either assigned to an Area Editor or handled directly by the Editor-in-Chief. Based on the Editor’s assessment, the manuscript is then sent to at least two independent reviewers. Each reviewer is typically given up to four weeks to provide their evaluation; however, this period may be extended depending on their availability.

Bulletin of Biomathematics follows a single-blind peer-review process, in which reviewers are aware of the authors’ identities, while the authors remain unaware of the reviewers’ identities. Once the reviews are received, the Area Editor makes a decision and communicates it to the author, along with the reviewers’ comments and any accompanying files.

If the reviews are favorable, authors are expected to submit a revised version of their manuscript within two months of receiving the editor’s decision. This deadline may be extended upon request, provided the authors inform the editor in advance. If the revised manuscript is not submitted within the given timeframe, the submission will be treated as a new manuscript, even if it incorporates the previously requested revisions.

When resubmitting, authors must include a new cover letter, a detailed response-to-reviewers letter, and a revised version of the manuscript—ideally with changes highlighted or shown in a different color for easy reference.

In the case of any change in authorship (such as the addition or removal of an author), the authors must provide a clear explanation for the change. All authors, including those added or removed, are required to complete and sign the BBM Author Changes Form, which must be submitted along with the revised manuscript.

The revised manuscript is then re-evaluated by the Area Editor and/or the original reviewers. Based on their recommendations, the Editor-in-Chief makes the final decision regarding acceptance. If necessary, additional revisions may be requested to ensure that all reviewer concerns have been fully addressed.

Once a manuscript is accepted for publication, an official acceptance letter is sent to the corresponding author. Authors are then required to submit the source file of the manuscript in accordance with the Bulletin of Biomathematics (BBM) submission template. At this stage, changes to authorship (such as adding or removing authors) are no longer permitted.

The manuscript is subsequently forwarded to the Copyeditor for linguistic and technical revisions. Following copyediting, the Layout Editor prepares the galley proofs, which are sent to the authors for final review prior to publication. Authors are expected to check only for typographical errors and return the corrected proofs within 48 hours.

After the final verification by the Layout Editor and Proofreader, the manuscript is assigned a DOI number, published online, and included in an upcoming issue of the journal. Once the issue is published, all corresponding metadata and article files are submitted to relevant indexing databases.
