ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH LITERACY IN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN TÜRKİYE: GENERAL, AIR, FOOD, AND WATER DOMAINS IN A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY

Abstract

This study was conducted to examine the levels of environmental health literacy (EHL) among university students in the areas of general, air, food and water health, and to investigate the relationship between these levels and sociodemographic and lifestyle characteristics. The sample for this descriptive, cross-sectional study consisted of 970 students enrolled at universities in Mersin. Data were collected using a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Turkish version of the Environmental Health Literacy Questionnaire; analyses utilised descriptive statistics, the independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA and Pearson correlation. It was determined that Environmental Health Literacy scores varied across sub-dimensions (General: 3.72±0.65; Air: 2.10±0.63; Food: 4.19±0.66; Water: 3.66±0.60). It was found that female students scored higher on the food and water dimensions, those aged 21 and over scored higher on the general and water dimensions, and students in health-related programmes scored higher on the air and water dimensions (p ≤ 0.05). Furthermore, consumption of home-cooked food and higher levels of physical activity were associated with higher Environmental Health Literacy across multiple dimensions. The strongest correlation among the sub-dimensions was found between food and water literacy (r = 0.591; p < 0.01). In conclusion, environmental health literacy among university students exhibits a multidimensional structure that varies by field of study. This suggests that field-specific interventions may be more effective than general approaches in higher education.
