DISCOURSE ON FEMININITY AND MASCULINITY IN FAR-RIGHT MEDIA: A FEMINIST CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF EVIE MAGAZINE

Abstract

This study aims to reveal how the discourses of “femininity” and “masculinity” are constructed in the news articles of Evie Magazine, a far-right publication, and how these texts reproduce patriarchal power structures. In this study, 10 news articles published in the U.S.-based Evie Magazine were analyzed using feminist critical discourse analysis. Feminist critical discourse analysis refers to the application of critical discourse analysis from a feminist perspective, aiming to uncover the implicit meanings in texts and to reveal gender-based hegemonic power relations within discourse. Within the framework of the analysis, the representation of womanhood and manhood was examined linguistically through ‘adjectivization’ and ‘emotional loadings’; discursively through ‘naturalization: women as service providers, men as selectors and decision-makers’, ‘legitimization: celebrities also dream of motherhood; men are also subjected to hostility,’ ‘victimization: women victimized by feminism and men victimized by feminism,’ and ‘the traditional family ideal: the young and beautiful mother, the father deserving of gratitude.’ It was concluded that the analyzed news articles adopted anti-feminism as their central theme and produced a narrative suggesting that individuals who embrace feminist values—regardless of gender—would suffer harm. Although presented as a women’s magazine, Evie Magazine’s analyzed news articles reflected a mission of male advocacy. It is observed that most studies addressing the relationship between the far right and the media have primarily focused on social media platforms and content produced by influencers. Unlike previous studies, this research focuses on an online journal that operates in the digital sphere and publishes content aligned with far-right ideology, thereby providing a timely contribution to the literature.

AŞIRI SAĞ MEDYADA KADINLIK VE ERKEKLİK SÖYLEMİ: EVIE DERGİSİ ÜZERİNE FEMİNİST ELEŞTİREL BİR ANALİZ

Abstract

Bu çalışma, aşırı sağcı bir yayın organı olan Evie Dergisi’nin haberlerinde “kadınlık” ve “erkeklik” söyleminin nasıl inşa edildiğini ve bu metinlerin erkek egemen güç yapılarını nasıl yeniden ürettiğini ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır. Çalışmada, ABD menşeili Evie Dergisi’nde yayımlanan 10 haber feminist eleştirel söylem analizi ile çözümlenmiştir. Feminist eleştirel söylem analizi, metinlerdeki örtük anlamları ortaya çıkarmayı amaçlayan eleştirel söylem analizinin feminist bir bakış açısıyla uygulanmasını ifade etmekte ve söylemdeki cinsiyete dayalı hegemonik güç ilişkilerini ortaya çıkarmayı hedeflemektedir. Analiz çerçevesinde kadınlık ve erkeklik temsilinin dilsel boyutta ‘sıfatlandırma’ ve ‘duygusal yüklemeler’; söylemsel boyutta ‘doğallaştırma: hizmet aracı olarak kadın, seçici ve karar verici olarak erkek’, ‘meşrulaştırma: ünlüler de anneliği hayal ediyor; erkekler de düşmanlığa maruz kalıyor’, ‘mağdurlaştırma: feminizmin mağdur ettiği kadın ve feminizmin mağdur ettiği erkek’, ‘geleneksel aile ideali: genç ve güzel anne, minnet duyulması gereken baba’ olmak üzere toplam altı tematik başlıkta toplandığı tespit edilmiştir. İncelenen haberlerin, feminizm karşıtlığını temel tema olarak benimsediği ve feminizm değerlerini benimseyen bireylerin—cinsiyetten bağımsız olarak—zarar göreceği yönünde bir söylem ürettiği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Evie Dergisi, bir kadın dergisi olarak sunulmasına rağmen incelenen haberlerde erkek savunuculuğu misyonunu öncelediği görülmektedir. Aşırı sağ ve medya ilişkisine değinen araştırmaların çoğunlukla sosyal medya platformlarına ve etkileyiciler tarafından üretilen içeriklere odaklandıkları görülmektedir. Bu çalışma, önceki çalışmalardan farklı olarak dijital ortamda varlığını sürdüren ve aşırı sağ ideoloji doğrultusunda yayıncılık yapan çevrimiçi bir dergiye odaklanmakta ve literatüre güncel bir katkı sağlamaktadır.
