MATERNAL EMOTION REGULATION AND MATERNAL PARENTING STYLES AS PREDICTORS OF CHILD TEMPERAMENT
Abstract
Temperament is a structure defined by an individual’s personality traits that can be observed from early childhood and consists of behavioral patterns. It is influenced by genetic and environmental factors. This study aims to explain the effect of parental emotion regulation and attitudes on child temperament. The study population consisted of mothers of preschool children. Data were collected using a personal information form, the Temperament in Children Scale, the Parental Attitude Scale (PAS), and the Maternal Behavior Rating Scale (MBRS). Multiple linear regression and hierarchical regression analysis were used for data analysis. According to the results of the study, it was found that parental emotion regulation had an effect on democratic, authoritarian, and overprotective attitudes, and parental attitudes had an effect on reactivity, positivity, and timidity of child temperament. It was found that parental emotion regulation and attitudes were effective on child temperament, and parental attitudes had a regulatory role. As a result, it can be said that parental emotion regulation and attitudes have an effect on child temperament.
