Direnişin Dokusu: Isabella Hammad’ın The Parisian Romanında Filistin Kimliğinin Çözümlenmesi

Abstract

Filistin asıllı Britanyalı bir yazar olan Isabella Hammad, 2019'da yayımlanan ilk romanı The Parisian ile dikkatleri üzerine çekmiş ve 2023'te Granta'nın Genç Britanyalı Roman Yazarlarının En İyileri listesinde yer almıştır. Roman, 20. yüzyılın başlarında eğitim için Fransa'ya gönderilen genç bir Filistinli olan Midhat Kamal'ın kişisel anlatısı üzerinden Filistin meselesinin karmaşık inceliklerini ele alıyor. Okurlar, Midhat'ın yolculuğu aracılığıyla, Filistin halkının kaderini tarihsel olarak şekillendiren kimlik, yerinden edilme ve jeopolitik dinamikler arasındaki çok yönlü ilişkilere tanıklık ediyor. The Parisian, kişisel olanla siyasi olanı iç içe geçirerek, süregelen zorlukların ortasında Filistinlilerin kendi kaderini tayin etme arayışının tarihsel karmaşıklıklarını sunuyor. Bu makale, Hammad'ın eserinin sömürgecilik ve yerinden edilme anlatılarını geri kazandığını ve egemen söylemlere meydan okuyan güçlü bir kendi kaderini tayin vizyonu inşa ettiğini savunmaktadır. Metin, bireysel travmayı kolektif direnişin merkezine alarak, kişisel kimliğin nasıl bir siyasi dönüşüm alanı haline geldiğini ortaya koymaktadır.

Threads of Resistance: Unraveling Palestinian Identity in Isabella Hammad’s The Parisian

Abstract

Isabella Hammad, a British-Palestinian author, drew attention with her 2019 debut novel, The Parisian, earning a place on the Granta Best of Young British Novelists list in 2023. The novel navigates the complex nuances of the Palestinian issue through the personal narrative of Midhat Kamal, a young Palestinian sent to France to study in the early 20th century. Through Midhat’s journey, readers witness the multifaceted relations between identity, displacement, and geopolitical dynamics that have historically shaped the fate of the Palestinian people. The Parisian intertwines the personal and the political, introducing the historical complexities of the Palestinian quest for self-determination amidst ongoing challenges. This paper argues that Hammad’s work reclaims historical narratives of colonialism and displacement, constructing a powerful vision of self-determination that challenges dominant discourses. By centering individual trauma within collective resistance, the text reveals how personal identity becomes a site of political transformation.
