A Study on Cybersecurity Awareness Conducted Between Industry Professionals and Random Individuals

Abstract

This study was conducted to compare the cybersecurity awareness levels of young individuals aged 15-26 with those of professionals working in the cybersecurity and software sectors. A 67-item survey measuring awareness across nine categories was administered face-to-face at the Bağcılar Municipality E-Sports Center for the youths and online for the professionals. Group comparisons were based on the mean scores of each category, and intergroup differences were analyzed using the Welch t-test, with results presented in Table 2. Survey reliability was confirmed by Cronbach's alpha internal consistency coefficients calculated for each category. Findings indicate that sector professionals demonstrated significantly higher awareness than the youths in the areas of advanced technical knowledge, practical security measures, and incident response management. Conversely, the young participants exhibited lower awareness in recognizing social engineering threats. This study underscores the need to tailor cybersecurity training programs to specific target audiences and offers an original contribution by providing a comparative analysis of awareness differences between youths and professionals.

Siber Güvenlik Farkındalığı Üzerine Sektör Çalışanları ve Rastgele Bireyler Arası Yapılan Farkındalık Çalışması

Abstract

Bu çalışma, 15-26 yaş aralığındaki genç bireyler ile siber güvenlik ve yazılım sektöründe çalışan profesyonellerin siber güvenlik farkındalık düzeylerini karşılaştırmak amacıyla yürütülmüştür. Dokuz kategoride farkındalığı ölçen 67 soruluk bir anket, gençler için Bağcılar Belediyesi E-Spor Merkezi'nde yüz yüze, profesyoneller için ise çevrimiçi olarak uygulanmıştır. Her kategorinin ortalaması hesaplanarak gruplar karşılaştırılmıştır. Grup karşılaştırmaları her kategorinin ortalama puanlarına dayandırılmış ve gruplar arası farklılıklar Welch t-testi kullanılarak analiz edilmiş, sonuçlar Tablo 2'de sunulmuştur. Anketin güvenilirliği, her kategori için hesaplanan Cronbach alfa iç tutarlılık katsayılarıyla doğrulanmıştır. Bulgular, sektör profesyonellerinin ileri teknik bilgi, pratik güvenlik önlemleri ve olay müdahale yönetimi alanlarında gençlere kıyasla önemli ölçüde daha yüksek farkındalık gösterdiğini göstermektedir. Buna karşılık, genç katılımcılar sosyal mühendislik tehditlerini tanıma konusunda daha düşük farkındalık sergilemiştir. Bu çalışma, siber güvenlik eğitim programlarının belirli hedef kitlelere göre uyarlanması gerekliliğinin altını çizmekte ve gençler ile profesyoneller arasındaki farkındalık farklılıklarının karşılaştırmalı bir analizini sunarak özgün bir katkı sunmaktadır.
