The Meaning World of the Concept of Recreation: A Metaphorical Analysis

Abstract

The concept of recreation, which can be described as the evaluation of leisure time, may be perceived through different metaphors by individuals. This perception varies depending on the associations individuals establish with the concept. This study aims to identify individuals’ perceptions of the concept of recreation through metaphors. The research was conducted within the framework of a qualitative research design based on phenomenology. Considering the time constraint, snowball sampling was employed, and the data obtained from 151 participants were subjected to content analysis. As a result of the analysis, six different metaphor categories were identified. The findings revealed that participants mostly expressed the concept of recreation through metaphors associated with elements that promote psychological well-being. In addition, it was determined that some participants had not previously heard of the concept of recreation or did not fully understand what it represents. The findings indicate that awareness of the concept is limited and that perceptions of recreation are reflected through a restricted range of metaphors.
