Investigation of University Students’ Knowledge Levels About HPV Infections and Vaccine

Abstract

Objective: One of the most common sexually transmitted diseases is the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection. In this study, it was aimed to determine the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of IKCU faculty of medicine university students about HPV and HPV vaccine and to investigate their relationship with sociodemographic characteristics such as age, faculty, and economic status. Material and Methods: An online survey was conducted with 261 volunteers who are students of the IKCU medical faculty. In the survey, all volunteers were asked 10 questions about demographic data, 31 questions about HPV and vaccines, knowledge level and involvement. IBM SPSS statistics program was used for survey data. Results: In questions that measure participants’ general knowledge of HPV, there was no significant difference between the male and female students and between the annual school period on knowledge of HPV. Regarding the questions which measure HPV knowledge, 16 of the questions were answered correctly by the majority of the participitants. However, in 8 of the questions, the answer of the majority was wrong. The rates for wrongly answered questions are as follows: HPV infections are very rare (42.9%), HPV infections can be treated with antibiotics (48.7%), HPV can cause HIV (52.9%), cervical cancer develops in all HPV (+) women (41.9%), The HPV vaccine protects against all STDs (45.6%), cervical cancer does not develop in those who are vaccinated against HPV (37.2%), and there is no need for cervical smear screening in those who have been vaccinated (36.8%). The rate of the students who know about the HPV vaccine was significantly higher in participitants who had previous sexual intercourse, whose parents have a job, who spend the longest part of their life in the city center, and who previously received sexual education. The most common reasons and rates for those who do not want to get vaccinated are as follows: lack of knowledge about the vaccine (23.2%), high price of the vaccine (22%), the vaccine is not under the coverage of health insurance (15,8%). Conclusion: According to the results of our study we thought that the knowledge of the students of the IKCU faculty of medicine about HPV and its vaccines was not sufficient. We thought that information about HPV can be provided especially to the students whose mothers or fathers do not work, who mostly lived in villages or towns in their lifespan, who did not receive sexual education previously, and who did not have sexual intercourse. The results of our study may help to increase the level of knowledge and awareness about HPV vaccines among the students.

ÜNİVERSİTE ÖĞRENCİLERİNİN HPV ENFEKSİYONLARI VE AŞILARI HAKKINDAKİ BİLGİ DÜZEYLERİNİN ARAŞTIRILMASI

Abstract

Amaç: Cinsel yolla bulaşan en yaygın hastalıklardan biri İnsan Papilloma Virüsü (HPV) enfeksiyonudur. Bu çalışmada İKCU Tıp Fakültesi üniversite öğrencilerinin HPV ve HPV aşısı hakkındaki bilgi, tutum ve davranışlarının belirlenmesi ve yaş, ekonomik durum gibi sosyodemografik özelliklerle ilişkisinin araştırılması amaçlanmıştır. Materyal ve metot: İKÇÜ Tıp Fakültesi'nde öğrenim gören 261 gönüllü öğrenci ile çevrimiçi anket yapıldı. Ankette tüm gönüllülere demografik verilerle ilgili 10 soru, HPV ve aşılarla ilgili 31 soru, bilgi düzeyi ve katılımları sorulmuştur. Anket verileri için IBM SPSS istatistik programı kullanılmıştır. Bulgular: HPV genel bilgi düzeyini ölçen sorularda kız ve erkek öğrenciler arasında ve öğrencilerin tıp fakültesi dönemi ile HPV farkındalığı arasında anlamlı bir fark bulunamadı.16 soruda çoğunluğun cevabı doğru idi. 8 soruda ise çoğunluğun cevabı yanlıştı. Yanlış cevaplanan soruların oranları: HPV enfeksiyonları çok nadir görülür (%42.9), HPV antibiyotikler ile tedavi edilebilir (%48.7), HPV HIV’e sebep olabilir (%52.9), HPV (+) ise mutlaka cervix kanseri gelişir (%41.9), HPV aşısı tüm CYBH’a karşı korur (%45.6), Aşı yapılanlarda cervix kanseri gelişmez (%37.2), Aşı yapılanlarda smear takibi yapmaya gerek yoktur (%36.8) şeklinde idi. Daha önce cinsel ilişkisi olanlarda, anne-baba çalışanlarda, daha önce en uzun süre yaşadığı yer şehir merkezi olanlarda, cinsellik konusunda eğitim alanlarda HPV aşısını bilme oranı anlamlı olarak daha fazla bulundu. Aşı yaptırmayı düşünmeyenlerde en sık sebepler sırası ile: Aşı hakkında yeterli bilgi olmayışı (%23.2), Aşının fiyatının yüksek olması (%22), ve Aşının SGK kapsamında olmaması (%15.8) şeklinde saptandı. Sonuç: Bu çalışmada Tıp Fakültesi öğrencilerinin HPV ve aşıları hakkındaki bilgilerinin yeterli olmadığı görülmüştür. Çalışmamızın sonuçlarına göre özellikle anne veya baba çalışmayan, çoğunlukla köy veya ilçede yaşamış, daha önce cinsellik eğitimi almamış, cinsel ilişkide bulunmamış öğrencilerde HPV bilgilendirilmesi yapılabilir. Çalışmamızın sonuçlarının üniversite öğrencilerinin HPV enfeksiyonları ve HPV aşıları hakkında bilgi düzeylerinin ve farkındalıklarının artmasına yardımcı olacağını düşünüyoruz.
