MRI-based Research on Temporomandibular Joint Disorders: A Bibliometric Analysis of Global Publication Trends

Abstract

Background and Aim: This study aims to conduct a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of scientific publications that employ magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the evaluation of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), highlighting research trends, influential contributors, and thematic evolution over time. Materials and Methods: A systematic search was performed in the Web of Science Core Collection database to identify research articles focusing on MRI and TMJ. The search included all publications up to 2024, filtered by document type. Bibliometric indicators such as publication year, citation counts, contributing countries, authors, institutions, journals, and keyword frequency were analyzed. Data were processed using the Bibliometrix package in R and visualized through Excel and VOSviewer. Results: A total of 1,852 articles published between 1985 and 2024 were included. The annual publication rate showed a steady increase, with a sharp rise after 2010. The most productive countries were the United States, Japan, and China, while institutions like Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the University of Rochester had the highest output. Keyword clustering revealed three dominant research themes: diagnostic imaging, disc displacement and surgical interventions, and systemic/paediatric associations. Despite the growing volume of research, notable gaps persist in standardization and international collaboration. Conclusion: MRI continues to play a pivotal role in TMJ research. This bibliometric analysis provides valuable insights into the development and status of the field, identifies critical gaps, and suggests future directions emphasizing standardization, interdisciplinary research, and technological integration.
