Anhydrous Chromic Chloride

Abstract

Anhydrous chromic chloride, CrCI3, is not yet manufactured on the tonnage scale even though it has several potential industrial uses, owing to difficulties encountered in scaling up the known laboratory methods of preparation. These problems are reviewed in the present work, and criteria for an ideal process for the large-scale production of CrClj are thus identified. A new low-tempcrature route to CrCl3 is proposed that meets these criteria and is therefore suitable for commercial exploitation.
