Abstract

Chromie hydrate has been precipitated in a readily filterahle form at 60-80°C with high recovery of chromium hy neutralising a solution of 0.8M chromic chloride in 2M hydrochloric acid, prepared hy the reduction of a solution of 0.8M sodium chromate in 6M hydrochloric acid by methanol, with an aqueous suspension of 10 % w /v light magnesia. The precipitated chromic hydrate can be dried in air at 110°C to form a friable product that is suitable for use as an inter- mediate in the manufacture of anhydrous chromic chloride, and the magnesia is easily regene- rated.
