The reaction of l-nitrobenzo[c]cinnoline with hydroxylamine in the presence of potassium hydroxide in ethanol gave the corresponding 2- and 4-amino derivatives. The reaction of 2- nitrobenzo[c]cinnoline 6-oxide with hydroxylamine under the same conditions yielded 2- nitrosobenzo[c]cinnoline 6-oxide. Mononitration of A-acetylbenzo[c]cinnolin-2-amine occurred at position 1.
