Abstract

The reactions of Solutions of mercurie chloride in organic solvents with diphenyltin dich¬loride complexes of the type, Ph2SnCI2, L; where L = hipyridyl, dimethyl-hipyridyl, o-phenant- hroline, dimethyl-o-phenan-throline tripyridyl and pyridine-N-oxide were studied.
The produets ohtained were of the type, HgCl2, nL where n = 1 or 3. Diphenyltin dichlo¬ride was recovered from the reaction mixture. This may be partly attributed to the stability of HgCl2 complexes compared with that of the analogous complexes formed with diphenyltin dichloride, and partly to the labile nature of the ligand molecules.
When an ethanolic solution of mercurie chloride was added to the complex, Ph2SnCl2, Ph3PO in the same solvent, phenyl mercurie chloride was readily ohtained, PhHgCİ as the first produet. Because of the low accepting power of this compound, PhHgCİ önce it is formed no complex with Ph3PO was ohtained-

In no case a bridged eomplex of the type PhgCİ Sn Hg , \ \

similar to that reported by Allison and Mann1, was ohtained-
In this connection we have found it interesting to prepare authen- tic samples of the HgCb, nL complex compounds, for the purpose of comparison, starting from mercurie chloride and the corresponding ligand in organic solvents. Attempted preparations of similar comple- xes starting from PhHgCİ or Ph2Hg, were unsuccessful.
