Charactezation of virulent bacteriophages of streptococcus salivarus subsp. thermophilus and lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus

Abstract

The genomes of 23 Streptococcus salivarus subsp. thermophilus bacteriophages and 24 Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus bacteriophages were characterized by restriction endonuclease pattems and hoşt range specificities. Bacteriophage genome sizes ranged from 21.0-72.2 kb. Four closely related bacteriophage group were designed according to the similarity in ScoRI fragments obtained from each bacteriophage DNA. Hoşt range determination tests of bacteriophages indicated that Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus bacteriophages had highly species specifıc host-range character.
