Investigation of Aggression Levels in Türkiye U20 National Wrestling Team Athletes in Terms of Academic Achievement and Competition Ranking
Abstract
Purpose: The main purpose of this study is to determine the aggression levels of U20 (under 20) wrestling athletes actively continuing their sports life throughout Türkiye and to analyze these levels in terms of various variables, especially academic achievement and competition Ranking. In this study, which has an original quality in terms of covering Türkiye U20 National Team athletes especially on the scale of Türkiye, the predictive effect of athletes' academic achievement levels and the Rankings they obtained in competitions on aggression sub-dimensions (physical, verbal, hostility, etc.) was examined.
Method: This study employed a descriptive survey model within the framework of quantitative research methods. The population consisted of Türkiye U20 National Wrestling Team athletes, and since the entire population was included, the sample comprised 54 athletes (n = 54). The Buss–Perry Aggression Questionnaire (BPAQ) was used as the data collection instrument.
Results: The theoretical and descriptive data obtained within the scope of the research show that aggression in sports is not only a physical act, but is affected by multidimensional factors such as money perception, sense of belonging, and psychological performance. Contrary to traditional views in the literature that sports reduce aggression, it has been determined that success pressure can trigger aggression in branches with high competition.
Conclusion: The findings demonstrated that aggression levels among Türkiye U20 National Wrestling Team athletes differed significantly according to academic achievement and competition ranking. Athletes with higher academic achievement and those who placed second in competitions exhibited higher levels of physical aggression and anger. In contrast, age, years of sports participation, educational status, type of high school graduated from, and region of residence were not significant determinants of aggression levels. These findings suggest that aggression among young elite wrestlers may be influenced not only by sporting performance but also by the psychological demands associated with academic achievement and competitive pressure.
