Emergency distance education and integration process in physiotherapy

Abstract

This study aimed to review the integration process of physiotherapy and rehabilitation education into the distance education system in Turkey, where emergency distance education was implemented due to the COVID-19 outbreak that occurred in December 2019 and, to shed light on the development studies that can be done in the future. Even though distance education systems were being used in different fields of basic medical sciences and physiotherapy before the pandemic, the fact that higher education institutions had to adapt all forms of education, especially the practical training, only to distance education has created various challenges. In addition to the need to accelerate the adaptation process to the system, determining and evaluating the advantages and disadvantages for students, teachers and institutions can enable the development of traditional education system by being supported by distance education systems in the future. In this context, developing systems in the field of physiotherapy as more effective and supportive of practical training, revising the curriculum, providing innovations such as pedagogical support and developing an entity system for physiotherapy in the future will be necessary.
