Determining the healthy lifestyle behaviors of lecturers carrying out a duty in medical faculty
Abstract
Aim: The purpose of this study was to determine the healthy lifestyle behaviors of lecturers carrying out a duty in university hospitals in the city center of Konya. Subjects and Method: The target population of the descriptive study comprised 309 lecturers carrying out a duty in internal and surgical branches in Konya Selçuk University Medical Faculty and Konya Necmettin Erbakan University Meram Medical Faculty between 1 March - 30 April 2013. The whole population was included in the study without sampling and 140 (45.3%) lecturer who agreed to complete the data form took part in the study. The data collection tool of the study comprised a personal information form and 40 questions prepared by the researchers on the basis of the literature aimed at determining healthy life behaviors and health screenings. In analysis of the data the SPSS 22 package program was used. The data was summarized via mean ± standard deviation and percentage. Results: The mean age of the lecturers who took part in the study was 44.9 ± 8.9 years and 29.3% of them were female. Of the lecturers who took part in the study, 72.8% stated that they had had blood pressure, 58.6% blood glucose and 61.4% cholesterol measurement within the last six months. Of the male lecturers, 86% had never had prostate screening and 81.0% bone density screening. Of the female lecturers, 68.2% had never had mammography, 53.6% bone density screening and 48.7% PAP smear screening. Conclusion: The study found that the lecturers had higher levels of smoking, alcohol use and body weight. Most lecturers had had blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol measurements within the last six months; however, they had not had screening tests (mammography, PAP smear, prostate).
