The Relationship Of Sleep Quality With Pulmonary Function And Balance In University Students

Abstract

BACKGROUND: There is no study in the literature that examines the relationship between sleep, breathing, and balance in university students. OBJECTIVE: To explore the correlation between sleep quality parameters, pulmonary function, and balance among university students. METHODS: A total of 45 volunteer university students were enrolled in this study. The sleep quality of the students was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), while their balance was evaluated through the Stork Balance Test. Pulmonary functions were measured using spirometry, with participants' Tiffenau ratios (FEV1/FVC) and Maximum Voluntary Ventilation (MVV) values assessed using the Cosmed Fitmate Med device from Cosmed the Metabolic Company, located in Rome, Italy. Data analysis was conducted utilizing the Spearman Correlation analysis test. FINDINGS: Sleep issues were identified in 35 participants (77.80%). No significant correlation was observed between PSQI total scores and sub-parameters, and FEV1/FVC values (r<0.3, p>0.05). Although no substantial correlation emerged between participants' PSQI total scores and MVV values (r<0.3, p>0.05), a weak correlation was noted between the sleep duration sub-parameter and MVV values (r=0.301, p=0.044). Similarly, no meaningful correlation was found between participants' PSQI total scores and sub-parameters, and Stork Balance Test results (r<0.3, p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Sleep issues were identified as prevalent among university students. Extending sleep duration resulted in elevated MVV values. To enhance the sleep quality of university students, interventions such as time management coaching, guidance on selecting ergonomic mattresses and pillows, and training for preventing technostress could be provided.
