Validity and Reliability of the Professionalism Assessment Scale in Turkish Dental Students

Abstract

Objective : In this study, it was aimed to determine the professionalism attitudes of dental students towards the dental profession and to evaluate the validity and reliability of the scale by using the Professionalism Evaluation Scale adapted into Turkish by Tanrıverdi et al. Methods : First, the Professionalism Assessment Scale adapted into Turkish by Tanrıverdi et al. was updated by dentists and linguists so that it could be understood by dental students. Before data collection, a pilot study was conducted with 30 students. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted for construct validity. Test-retest, item correlations, split-half analysis and Cronbach's alpha coefficient were evaluated to determine the reliability of the scale. SPSS 25.0 and JAMOVI 2.5.3.0 package programs were used for statistical analysis. Statistical significance level was accepted as P<0.05. Results : 37.8% of the participants were male, 62.2% were female. In addition, most of them (27.9%) were 3rd year and 86.2% of them were interested in specialization. The mean total score of the Professionalism Assessment Scale was 94.41±11.19. The three-factor structure of the scale as "empathy and humanism", "professional relationship and development" and "responsibility" was confirmed. Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.90, and both Spearman-Brown and Guttman split-half coefficients were 0.82. The intraclass correlation coefficient between test-retest measurements was 0.70. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the model was appropriate for the original version of the scale (χ2 /df = 2.33, RMSEA = 0.061, SRMR= 0.052, CFI = 0.901). Conclusion : The Dentistry version of the Professionalism Rating Scale is a valid and reliable instrument to determine the professionalism attitudes of dental students in Turkey.

Türk Diş Hekimliği Öğrencilerinde Profesyonellik Değerlendirme Ölçeğinin Geçerliliği ve Güvenilirliği

Abstract

Amaç: Bu çalışmada diş hekimliği öğrencilerine, Tanrıverdi ve arkadaşlarının, Türkçe’ye uyarlamış oldukları Profesyonellik Değerlendirme Ölçeği kullanılarak diş hekimliği fakültesi öğrencilerinin diş hekimliği mesleğine yönelik profesyonellik tutumlarının belirlenmesi ve ölçeğin geçerlilik, güvenirliğinin değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Yöntemler: İlk olarak Tanrıverdi ve arkadaşlarının, Türkçe’ye uyarlamış oldukları Profesyonellik Değerlendirme Ölçeği diş hekimliği öğrencilerinin anlayabileceği şekilde diş hekimleri ve dil uzmanları tarafından güncellenmiştir. Veri toplamaya başlamadan önce 30 öğrenci ile bir pilot çalışma gerçekleştirilmiştir. Yapı geçerliliği için doğrulayıcı faktör analizi yapılmıştır. Ölçeğin güvenilirliğini belirlemek için test-tekrar test, madde korelasyonları, split-half analizi ve Cronbach's alpha katsayısı değerlendirilmiştir. İstatistiksel analizler için SPSS 25.0 ve JAMOVİ 2.5.3.0 paket programları kullanılmıştır. İstatistiksel anlamlılık düzeyi p<,05 olarak kabul edilmiştir. Bulgular: Katılımcıların %37,8’i erkek iken %62,2’si kadın idi. Ayrıca çoğunlukla (%27,9) 3. Sınıf ve %86,2’si uzman olmak isteyenlerden oluşmaktadır. Profesyonellik Değerlendirme Ölçeği toplam puan ortalaması 94,41±11,19'tür. Ölçeğin "empati ve hümanizm", "mesleki ilişki ve gelişim" ve "sorumluluk" olmak üzere üç faktörlü yapısı doğrulanmıştır. Ölçeğin Cronbach alfa katsayısı 0,90; Spearman-Brown ve Guttman split-half katsayılarının her ikisi de 0,82'dir. Test-tekrar test ölçümleri arasındaki sınıf içi korelasyon katsayısı 0,70'dir. Doğrulayıcı faktör analizi, ölçeğin orijinal versiyonu için uygun bir model olduğunu göstermiştir (χ2 /df = 2,33, RMSEA = 0,061, SRMR= 0,052, CFI = 0,901). Sonuç: Profesyonellik Değerlendirme Ölçeği'nin Diş Hekimliği versiyonu, Türkiye'deki diş hekimliği öğrencilerinin profesyonellik tutumlarını belirlemek için geçerli ve güvenilir bir araçtır.
