Mean Platelet Volume and Lipid Profile Levels In Patients With Follicular Thyroid Cancer

Abstract

Background: In this study, we studied plasma mean platelet volume (MPV) and lipid profile levels in the follicular thyroid cancer patients and the correlation in between these parameters. Methods: The levels of MPV and lipid profile tests were assessed in 52 patients with follicular thyroid cancer and 33 control subjects. Results: While serum MPV levels were low in the healthy control group, this value was significantly increased in follicular thyroid cancer patients (FTC) (p = 0.001). In addition, when serum total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG) and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in the healthy control group were compared with FTC patients, it was found that these three values increased statistically significantly (p = 0.001) in these patients. Finally, when the healthy control group and FTC groups were compared for low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels; HDL-C values were lower in the FTC groups (p=0.002) while LDL-C values were measured statistically significantly higher (p = 0.001). There was a positive correlation between serum MPV levels and total cholesterol, LDL-C and TG levels (r=0.532, p = 0.001; r=0.701, p = 0.001; r=0.724, p = 0.001, respectively). However, when serum MPV levels and HDL-C levels were compared in terms of correlation, no correlation was detected between them. Finally, a correlation was also determined between measured tumor dimensions, total cholesterol, LDL-C and TG levels (r=0.756, p = 0.001; r=0.493, p = 0.001; r=0.527, p = 0.001, respectively). No statistically significant correlation was observed between MPV and tumor size (r = 0.239, p = 0.088) Conclusions: The results of the present study demonstrated that the patients with FTC are affected to increased serum MPV and changed lipid profile values which contribute to increased risk factor of cardiovascular diseases.
