This study deals primarily with the following themes: the term of lie, the kinds of lies, how lying is learned, reasons for lying, and the negative psychological and social effects of lying on the individual and social life. Next, lying is investigated in terms of its being perceived as a negative behavior in many religious, ethical and value systems and its being considered to be in the category of grave sins and to be a factor ruining the social unity and solidarity. Moreover, suggestions made towards how to struggle with lying. Lastly, the relationship between religion and lying is evaluated in tenns of its conflicting nature and the act of lying is examined within the context of its conflict with the individual itself, society, and God
