DETERMINATION OF BROKER SELECTION CRITERIA SCORES AND EVALUATION OF ALTERNATIVES IN MARITIME TRANSPORTATION
Abstract
Highly intensive
competition leads both the firms operating in manufacturing and service
industry separate their activities into main and supportive areas. Main
activities are the areas where the companies highly invest on to create
superior and differentiated values as against to their competitors. Supportive activities
can be defined as outsourced areas. Producers and transportation companies use
the services of intermediaries for supportive, complementary and facilitative
activities while focus on the main activities like production and
transportation. The intermediaries in sea transportation are the people who
serve as a bridge between the cargo owner or his representative and ship owner
or his representative. Freight forwarders, ship agents and brokers are the
examples of intermediaries in sea transportation. The aim of this study is to
determine the broker selection criteria and to identify the scores of each criterion.
In the methodology part, one of the multi criteria decision-making methods
called Fuzzy TOPSIS is used and by taking into consideration the views of
experts, each criterion is scored and the importance degrees are determined.
Finally, the alternative brokers are ranked for a company who needs broker
service with the VIKOR method
