The Impact of Social Media on Patients in Dentistry: A Survey Study - Cross-Sectional Research
Abstract
Aims: The aim of this study was to determine the social media platforms used by patients applying to a dental faculty and the duration of their use, as well as to evaluate the impact of these platforms on their choice of dentist, hospital, and treatment.
Methods: A 23-question survey was administered to 379 patients (253 females, 166 males; mean age: 30±10.64) who presented to the Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Clinic for various reasons. The survey included questions regarding demographic characteristics, duration of social media use, and the influence of social media on the selection of dentists, hospitals, and treatments by patients.
Results: The most used social media platforms were Instagram (41.7%) and WhatsApp (28.1%). Most participants (34.2%) reported using social media for 30–60 min daily. The majority stated that social media did not influence their choice of dentist (92.2%) or hospital (88.8%). Similarly, 89.9% of the participants reported that they had not undergone any dental treatment because of social media influence. Participants who believed that social media posts reflected reality and found dental-related posts useful were predominantly in the 18–29 age group (p<0.05). The most frequently encountered dental-related content was teeth whitening (37.4%).
Conclusion: The findings indicate that younger individuals have different perspectives on social media than other age groups. Additionally, since most participants reported that social media did not influence their choice of dentist or hospital, it appears that social media is not being used effectively in the field of dentistry.
