A Rare Complication of Idiopathic Osteosclerosis: A Case Report

Abstract

Idiopathic Osteosclerosis IO in the jaws is described as a localized radiopacity of unknown origin. Most of these lesions are asymptomatic and are discovered on radiographs taken for some other reason. This condition has been reported with a variety of names including dens bone island, enostosis and focal periapical osteopetrosis. The purpose of the present study is to report a case of external rooth resorption caused by IO.A 31-year-old male, doesn’t smoke and without known sistemic pathology was referred to our department for the pain in the left maxillary region. An intraoral examination revealed pain in the left maxillary first and second molar tooth that presented without restoration. The radiographic examination showed an isolated round mass with uniform radiopacity but without a surrounding radiolucent rim, below the left mandibular first molar teeth and is associated with external root resorption of the mesial root. For further evaluation cone beam computerized tomography assesment requested.In this case, IO was detected incidentally. The follow-up appointment was made for the patient 6 months later. In conclusion, the present report describes a rare case of external root resorption caused by IO

İdiyopatik Osteosklerozun Nadir Görülen Komplikasyonu: Olgu Sunumu

Abstract

Çenelerde gözlenen idiyopatik osteoskleroz İO , etiyolojisi bilinmeyen bir lokal radyopasite olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Bu lezyonların çoğu asemptomatik olmakla birlikte çoğu zaman başka nedenlerle alınan radyograflarda tesadüfen saptanırlar. Literatürde İO yerine; yoğun kemik adası, enostoz veya fokal periapikal osteopetrosis gibi çeşitli isimler de kullanılmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, İO’nun nadir görülen bir komplikasyonu olarak gözlenen eksternal kök rezorpsiyonu olgusunu sunmaktır.31 yaşında erkek hasta, sol üst arka bölgede ağrı şikayeti ile kliniğimize başvurdu. Hastadan alınan anamnezde herhangi bir sistemik hastalığının olmadığı ve sigara kullanmadığı öğrenildi. Klinik muayenede, sol üst birinci ve ikinci molar dişinde çürük ve ağrı olduğu gözlendi. Panoramik ve periapikal radyograflarda sol alt birinci molar dişinin kök apeksi üzerine süperpoze, düzensiz ve belirgin sınırlı radyoopasite izlendi. Mezial kök apeksinde rezorpsiyon ile uyumlu görüntü izlendi ve üç boyutlu değerlendirilebilmesi için konik ışınlı bilgisayarlı tomografi tetkiki istendi.Bu olguda, İO radyografik muayene sırasında tesadüfen saptandı. Hastaya 6 ay sonrası için takip randevusu verildi. Sonuç olarak, bu olgu sunumunda idiyopatik osteosklerozun nadir görülen bir komplikasyonu olarak eksternal kök rezorpsiyon olgusu açıklanmıştır
