Abstract

Abstract

Apical periododontitis (root canal infection) is an inflammatory and infectious disease characterized by hard tissue resorption and destruction of the periodontal ligament caused by the passage of microorganisms and their metabolites from the root canal to the periradicular area. The aim of this review is to look over root canal infections and the microorganisms that cause these infections and their detection methods with the current literature knowledge. The diversity of microorganisms found in the root canal is quite high and with the development of molecular methods, the detection of microorganisms causing root canal infections is increasing. Dentists should have knowledge about the microbial flora to develop effective treatment strategies against root canal infections.
