Abstract

Osmanlı bilim tarihi çalışmalarında genel kanı Avrupa’daki bilimsel gelişmelerin ülkeye modern eğitim kurumları vasıtasıyla ithal edildiği ve medrese çevrelerinin Batı kökenli bilimsel bilgiye ihtiyatla yaklaştığı, hatta yer yer karşı çıktığı yönündedir. Mısır’ı “büyük Osmanlı küresinin bir parçası” (s. 8) olarak tanımlayan Daniel A. Stolz, Kahire’yi merkeze alan bu bilim tarihi çalışmasında bir yandan ulemanın modern astronomi karşısındaki tavrını örneklerle ortaya koymakta, diğer yandan astronominin Mısır modernleşmesindeki rolünü Avrupa’da modern bilim eğitimi almış astronomlar üzerinden tartışmaktadır.
