Digital Anatomy of The Mental Foramen: Morphometric Evaluation Based on Multidedector CT Imaging

Abstract

Aim: This study aims to analyze the morphological characteristics of the mental foramen (MF) in multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) images, thereby reducing the risk of complications in mandibular surgery and anesthesia for dental professionals. Materials and Methods: MDCT images of a total of 300 patients (150 males, 150 females) aged 18-60 years were retrospectively analyzed. Images were acquired in axial and coronal planes with a minimum of 0.5 mm slices. The horizontal (MFh) and vertical (MFv) lengths of the MF and the distances to the alveolar crest (MF-UBM) and mandibular base (MF-LMB) were measured bilaterally. Statistically analyzed. Results: The mean age of the individuals was 32.02±11.77 years and the age difference between genders was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Mean MFv (right 3.27±0.62 mm, left 3.20±0.69 mm) and MFh (right 3.14±0.81 mm, left 3.16±0.85 mm) values were found. All MF measurements were significantly larger in males than females (p<0.05). There was no significant difference between age groups and sides (p>0.05). There was a weak, significant negative correlation (r=-0.114, p=0.049) between age and vertical length of the left MF (LMFv). Conclusion: The precise localization and dimensions of the MF are critical to reduce the risk of neurovascular injury in dental procedures. Our findings revealed that MF sizes were larger in men, but did not differ significantly overall by age and side. This information may aid in safer dental procedure planning.
