Author Guidelines

Required Documents for Manuscript Submission and Peer Review Process

General Conditions

  • The publication process of prospective articles submitted to the Journal of Natural and Cultural Heritage Studies (DOKUMAD) is conducted entirely through the DergiPark online system provided by TÜBİTAK-ULAKBİM.
  • Submitted articles must be original, and they must not have been previously published or be currently under review elsewhere.
  • In accordance with our ethical and fair publishing policy, an author may publish a maximum of 1 (one) article in the journal within a calendar year. This rule applies under all circumstances, regardless of whether the author is the corresponding author or a co-author. If an author's name appears on any article published in that year, a second article by the same author cannot be published in our journal within the same year.

Article Writing Template

  • Articles must be prepared in MS Word format using our journal's Article Template.
  • Margins: Must be set to A4 size, with 2 cm at the top, 2 cm at the bottom, 2 cm on the right, and 2.5 cm on the left.
  • Font and Paragraph Structure: The main text must be written in Garamond font, 11 pt, single-spaced, and justified. First-line indent (Tab) should not be used in paragraphs, and a 6 pt space must be left before and after each paragraph.
  • Articles, including the abstract, tables, figures, references, appendices, and extended summary, must be between a minimum of 5,000 and a maximum of 10,000 words and must not exceed 25 pages in total.
  • Visual elements in the article (photographs, drawings, sketches, maps, graphs, etc.) must not be grouped under a single "figure" heading; each must be presented with its own specific type name.
  • The first title in the language of the study must be written in all capital letters, bold, 11 pt, and centered. The title in the second language must be written with only the first letters capitalized, bold, and centered.
  • Numbering must start from the "Introduction" heading and continue up to the "Conclusion" heading using a decimal system (1., 2., 2.1., 2.1.1.) up to a maximum of 5 levels. Headings must be left-aligned, bold, 11 pt, with the first letter of each word capitalized. The References, Appendices, and Extended Summary headings are not numbered.
  • Research articles are expected to include the main sections of Introduction, Methodology, Findings, Discussion and Conclusion, and References, respectively.
  • Texts inside tables and figures must be in Garamond 9-10 pt and single-spaced.
  • The table number and title must appear above the table (e.g., Table 1. Table Title), while the figure number and title must appear below the figure.
  • Vertical lines must not be used in tables; a simple design consisting of only three main horizontal lines should be preferred. "Note" or "Source" statements below tables/figures must be written in 9 pt.
  • Equations and formulas must be left-aligned and numbered in parentheses on the far right of the equality.

Citation and Reference Rules

  • The reference system for articles submitted to the Journal of Natural and Cultural Heritage Research must comply with APA 7 (American Psychological Association 7th Edition) standards.
  • In-Text Citation: Single author (Berger, 1999); two authors in Turkish texts (Cheng ve Chan, 2008), in English texts (Cheng & Chan, 2008); three or more authors (Dedeoğlu et al., 2018).
  • Direct Quotations: Quotations shorter than 40 words must be given within quotation marks in the text, while quotations exceeding 40 words must be written as a separate indented paragraph with 1.25 cm left and right indents, in Garamond 11 pt block text format.
  • Reference Structure: References must be organized with a hanging indent (1.25 cm); set in Garamond 11 pt, justified, and without paragraph spacing.

Abstract and Extended Summary

  • Abstract: In accordance with the guidelines, the introduction of Turkish studies must include an English title, abstract, and keywords. The abstracts must be 150-200 words and clearly cover the purpose, method, and conclusion of the study. Keywords consisting of at least three and at most five words must be added.
  • Extended Summary: To increase international visibility, Turkish prospective articles must include an English Extended Summary at the end, while articles written in English or other languages must include a Turkish Extended Summary. The extended summary must consist of at least 400 words.

Similarity (Plagiarism) Limits

The following rules must be followed when obtaining and uploading similarity reports:

  • The overall similarity rate of the final version of the article must not exceed 20%.
  • The similarity rate for any single source must not exceed 2%.
  • The report must be generated by excluding quotations and the bibliography, without applying any word count quota.

Mandatory Files to Upload to the System

During article submission, the following documents must be uploaded completely via the DergiPark system:

  • Main Article Text (with author name(s) blinded, by filling out the DOKUMAD template)
  • Author Information Form (by filling out the relevant template)
  • Copyright Transfer Form (by filling out the relevant template, in PDF format with wet or e-signatures by all authors)
  • Plagiarism / Similarity Report
  • Ethics Committee Approval Document or Declaration Form

Other Information

  • Ethics Committee Approval (Mandatory): For studies requiring data collection such as surveys, interviews, focus group studies, experiments, and clinical research, the Ethics Committee Approval Document of the relevant field is required. Studies that do not provide an Ethics Committee Approval Document will not be considered for evaluation. If the study is of a theoretical/review type that does not require ethics committee approval, the "Declaration Form Stating That Ethics Committee Approval Is Not Required" must be uploaded to the system.
  • Ethical Statement: The author must declare that scientific and ethical principles were complied with in this study and that all utilized works are cited in the references.
  • Studies Derived from Theses and Proceedings: Articles derived from postgraduate theses or papers presented at scientific events (congresses/symposia) are accepted for evaluation in DOKUMAD. However, this situation must be explicitly declared with a footnote on the first page of the article.
  • Conflict of Interest Statement: The author must explicitly state whether there is any potential conflict of interest regarding the study.
  • Funding Support: The author must explicitly state whether any official, commercial, or non-profit organization provided funding support for the study.
