The Slow Internet Movement: How Possible is an Alternative Approach to a Consumption-Driven Digital Culture?

Year 2025, Issue: 27, 155 - 168, 14.11.2025

Abstract

Today, the digital culture has transformed into a consumption model centred around speed and instant access. Social media feed, notifications, and constantly updated content drive individuals to consume digital content faster, more frequently, and more superficially. This situation negatively affects the attention span and modes of meaning-making, leading to problems such as cognitive fatigue and a sense of dissatisfaction. This article examines the Slow Internet Movement, developed as an ethical alternative and an effort to deepen the digital experience in response to the speed-oriented digital culture. Conducted through a literature review, the study questions to what extent the Slow Internet Movement is applicable and sustainable within the current digital ecosystem. The research reveals that the dynamics of digital capitalism’s attention economy, which commodifies users’ time and reinforces a culture of speed through algorithmic steering, are the main structural obstacles facing the Slow Internet Movement. Furthermore, it identifies that digital inequalities and socioeconomic differences limit the adoption of slow internet practices. It is emphasised that the Slow Internet Movement must be supported by social and political reforms beyond individual awareness. In this context, reforms in media policies, strengthening digital rights, and the development of ethically based digital infrastructures are fundamental conditions for sustainability. In conclusion, the Slow Internet Movement should be regarded as a meaningful alternative at both individual and structural levels against the speed and superficiality of the digital age.

Yavaş İnternet Hareketi: Tüketim Odaklı Dijital Kültüre Alternatif Bir Yaklaşım Ne Kadar Mümkün?

Year 2025, Issue: 27, 155 - 168, 14.11.2025
https://doi.org/10.26650/4boyut.2025.1749828
