EFFECT OF DIFFERENT CURING CONDITIONS ON ULTRASONIC PULSE VELOCITY AND COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF LIGHTWEIGHT CONCRETE

Abstract

The paper reports the results of an experimental study on investigation of the effect of curing conditions on the

relationship between the ultrasonic pulse velocity and compressive strength of lightweight concrete with silica

fume. In addition to concrete mixture with only Portland cement, concrete mixture with 0%, 10% of silica fume

replaced with cement by weight was prepared. Maximum grain diameter of pumice stone is 16 mm. The

150×150×150 mm cube specimens were prepared for compressive strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity. The

specimens were cured in different curing conditions, namely standard 20±2 °C water, sealed and air cure for

periods of 3, 7, 14 and 28 days. The specimens were tested for compressive strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity.

The results showed that water cured specimens always gave the highest values followed by those cured as sealed

and in air irrespective of type and age of concrete and test methods; Furthermore, the ultrasonic pulse velocity and

compressive strength results for all curing conditions were analyzed by using regression analysis. In this analysis

result, it was obtained the high correlation coefficient.
