CONTROL OF SURFACE SETTELEMENTS WITH UMBRELLA ARCH MEDHOD IN SECOND STAGE EXCAVATIONS OF ISTANBUL METRO
Abstract
In metro tunnel excavations, it is important to control surface settlements observed before
and after excavation, causing damages for the surface structures. Otherwise, metro tunnel
can not be perform the task expected and the advantages of metro tunnel are lost. For this
purpose, 2. stage excavation of Istanbul Metro between Unkapanı and Yenikapı in various
geological formation was studied. In this study the New Austrian Tunneling Method
(NATM) and the Umbrella Arch Method which was applied additionally to NATM in sensitive regions were compared. After the study, it was found out that surface deformations especially in clay bearing formations could be controlled at a high degree by using the Umbrella Arch Method.
