Libya's Position in the Eastern Mediterranean Struggle
Abstract
Geopolitics has an important position in the International Relations literature as an approach that prioritizes the effect of geography on politics, which directs the policies of states in terms of the concepts of power, survival and dominance. In this context, the Eastern Mediterranean has always attracted the attention of states in relation to geopolitics. The region, which has come to the fore and attracted attention, especially with the hydrocarbon reserves discovered in the last twenty years, has become the main area of the struggle between the powers. As a regional country, the role of Libya in this struggle constitutes the main starting point of this study. The view that is emphasized and defended in the study is that Libya is a country which other states make policy about it, not a decisive and policymaking country in the struggle in the region, due to the internal problems it has experienced and its ineffectiveness in the international arena. The stated opinion is based on the fact that Libya lacks an effective government and that domestic stability cannot be achieved. In this context, the historical background was created by examining the importance attributed to the Eastern Mediterranean in the history of Libya, and the position of Libya was evaluated by comparing the policies established in the Eastern Mediterranean in recent years.
