Abstract

Tagore's long poetic career started with romantic poems in which love and nature are celebrated as two major sources of creative joy. With World War I, however, his work took on a modernist character, reflecting a new sense of doubt and uncertainty about the whole Western civilization. Nevertheless, he did not lose faith completely in Man's ability to create a world worth living in.
