Abstract

The purpose of this article is to find out the Cicero's thoughts of and attitude to young Pompeius and Sulla in between 89-78 BC in the light of his comparison of them with young Octavianus and Marcus Antonius respectively in Philippics. it has been concluded that Sulla was a bad dictator, but compared with him, Marcus Antonius worse than him in many respects, an enemy of Roman state and people. As to Pompeius, although he was a distinguished noble man, he fell far behind Octavianus in his services to Roman State and people; while the former seems to have contributed to a dictator's personel or political interests, the later appears to have served the Roman State and people, in spite of ali the disadvantages he had, in the best possible way and did more good than any Roman leader has ever done.
