Fabian Society ve İki Yenilikçi Yazar G. Bernard Shaw ve H.G.Wells, 1903-1908

Year 2000, Volume: 40 Issue: 3-4, 217 - 233, 01.01.2000

Abstract

Fabian Society and Two Revolutionary Writers, G.Bernard Shaw and H.G. Wells, 1903-1908

Year 2000, Volume: 40 Issue: 3-4, 217 - 233, 01.01.2000

Abstract

The early 1900s witnessed one of the fıercest battles of wit which took place between the two eminent socialist writers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. G.B. Shaw was a long standing member of the Fabian Society and, like most Fabians, impressed by H.G. Wells's sociological arguments and his vivid andfierce attacks on bourgeois values, proposed that Wells should be admitted to the ranks of the Society. This marked the beginning of a long controversy between Shaw ana Wells. The animosity stemmed particularly from Wells's intention to convert the Fabians into the kind of intellectual revolutionaries which he believed could establish the scientific and socialistic world state -that is, the sole system that could secure man's futureplace in the universe. Shaw being an acute observer of man, was quick to recognise Wells's real intention and his reluctance to identify himself with the Fabians. Yet as a greater platform artist, Shaw was capable of averting Wells's 'intervention' in the Fabian Society. By referring to this controversy often known as the 'Fabian Episode', the paper seeks to show that no matter what the differences of opinion between the two yvriters were, their struggle to lead socialism contributed to renewed activity in socialist propaganda and increased not only their popularity but also that of the Society. The paper also seeks to prove that -and this is its ultimate goal- socialism often recognised as a general term can be ezcessively uniaue and personal, hence leading to great disputes even between writers known as 'socialist'.
