The First-Love Story of Indian People: Pururavas and Urvaşi

Abstract

We can divide Indian Mythology in two periods as Vedic and Epic. In this huge mythology we find too much colorful pantheon of gods, goddeses and other mythological beings. In the beginning the people worshipped natural phenomenals, but in the course of time these phenomenals became principal gods and goddesses. People created sons and daugthers of these divie couples and some mythological creatures more. And humans added theirselves in some stories with sharing the subject these mythological beings such like Vidyadharas, Gandharvas or Apsarases. "Pururavas and Urvasi" is one of these stories. The subject-matter is love of a heavenly nymph and a mortal king. This story is one the first love stories in whole world literature. Probably Pururavas symbolize the Sun, Urvasi the Dawn. In Indian Mythology the sun gods are always masculine and the Dawn is always feminine. This interesting story shows the mentality of Vedic poets.

Hintlilerin İlk Aşk Öyküsü: Pururavas ve Urvaşi

Abstract

Hint Mitolojisini Vedik ve Epik olmak üzere iki döneme ayırabiliriz. Bu geniş mitoloji tanrılar, tanrıçalar ve aşağı yaratıklara ait öykülerle bezenmiştir. Başlangıçta doğal fenomenlerin bizzat kendilerine tapınılmış, zamanla da bunlar tanrılaştırılmıştır. Hatta tıpkı insanlar gibi tanrıların da eşleri ve çocukları olduğuna inanılmıştır. İnsanlarla bu göksel varlıklar arasında geçtiğine inanılan birçok öykü dile getirilmiştir. Pururavas ile peri kızı Urvaşi'nin öyküsü de bu öykülerden biridir. Öykü ölümlü kral Pururavas ile peri kızı Urvaşi arasındaki aşkı anlatır. Bu, belki de dünyadaki ilk aşk öykülerindendir. Pururavas güneşi; Urvaşi şafağı simgelemektedir. Mitolojide güneş hep erkek, şafak ise dişi olarak gösterilmiştir. Bu öykü, bunu oluşturan şairlerin düşünce yapılarını da yansıtmaktadır.
