Abstract

Aristocu klasik ulamlaştırma modeli ulamları analitik olarak ifade ederken ulam aidiyetlerini basit kriterlere ve özelliklere bağlı olgular olarak ifade etmekte, kavramların belirli ayırt edici özellikleri taşımaları halinde onların, ulamların eşit üyeleri olduklarını belirtmektedir. Eleanor Rosch’un 1970’lerde ortaya attığı bir dizi çalışmayla literatürde yer bulmuş olan Öntür Kuramı ise ulamları farklı ve eşit olmayan üyelere sahip birimler olarak ele almıştır. Kurama göre ulamın üyesi konumundaki bazı kavramlar, diğerlerine göre ulamı daha iyi temsil etmektedir. Bu temsiliyetin yani öntürleme eğiliminin, değişik yaş gruplarına göre ne tür farklılıklar ortaya çıkarabileceği sorusu bu araştırmanın konusunu oluşturmaktadır. Dört farklı yaş grubundan oluşan katılımcılara 12 ulam sunulmuş ve en iyi örnek olduğunu düşündükleri ya da akıllarına gelen ilk kavramı yazmaları istenmiştir. Ulamların gruplardaki öntürleri belirlendikten ve sayısal bulgular nicel anlamda ortaya konulduktan sonra bu bulguların yaş değişkeni ölçütünde içerdiği farklılıklar ‘nitel gözlemler’ kısmında yorumlanmıştır. Bu yapılırken ulamsal düzeyler ölçütündeki farklılıklar, biçimbilimsel farklılıklar ve somut ya da soyut ulamların öntürleme eğilimindeki etkisi tartışılmış, grupların öntürleme yaparken bu görünümler ölçütünde benzer güdülenmelere sahip olup olmadıkları sorusuna yanıt aranmıştır.

PROTOTYPE THEORY - A STUDY CONCERNING AGE VARIABLE

Abstract

The classical categorization model of Aristo defines categories analytically and represents category memberships as aspects related to basic criteria thus claims that as long as concepts possess certain distinctive features they are equal members of their respective categories. Prototype Theory which was introduced to the literature with a series of studies by Eleanor Rosch in 1970's on the other hand, approaches to categories as modules which have non equal and distinct members. According to the theory, some members of the category are better representators of it in comparison with others. The question of how this representation –tendency of prototypicalisation- may differ in respect to different age groups is the subject of this study. 12 categories were presented to participants from 4 different age groups and their best examples or the first concepts that would come to their mind were asked. After designating the prototypes in groups and reporting the quantitative findings, discussions of how these findings differ in respect to age variable were made in the section of qualitative results. Differences in the levels of categorisation, morphological differences and the effect of abstract and non abstract categories on prototypicalisation were identified.
