Rare Side Effects of Valproic Acid: Gingival Hyperplasia, and Cervical Lymphadenopathy

Abstract

Gingival hyperplasia is a common disorder seen in patients with epilepsy treated with phenytoin.It is rarely seen in patients taking sodium valproate therapy. Especially in mentally retardedpatients, poor oral hygiene causes to the accumulation of bacterial plaque and inflammationmight be occurs. Connective tissue increases due to inflammation and gingival hyperplasia isseen. We report a case of gingival hyperplasia due to valproic acid use to draw attention to rare adverseeffect of this drug

Valproik Asit’in Nadir Yan Etkileri: Gingiva Hiperplazisi Ve Servikal Lenfadenopati

Abstract

Dişeti hiperplazisi antiepileptik ilaçlardan fenitoin tedavisi alan epilepsi hastalarında sık görülenbir yan etkidir. Literatürde valproik asit tedavisi alan olgularda gingival hiperplazi çok nadirgözlenen bir yan etki olarak belirtilmiştir. Özellikle mental retardasyonlu hastalarda ağızhijyeninin kötü olması nedeniyle bakteriyel plak birikimi ve inflamasyon meydana gelebilir.İnflamasyona bağlı olarak konnektif dokuda artış ve sonrasında dişeti hiperplazisi görülebilir.Çalışmamızda valproik asit kullanımına bağlı gelişen gingival hiperplazi olgusunu, bu ilacınnadir görülen yan etkilerine dikkat çekmek amacıyla sunuyoruz
