Investigation of Serum Lipid Levels in Patients With Iron Deficiency Anemia

Abstract

Objective: Several metabolic pathways are affected by the reduction in the amount of iron iniron deficiency anemia (IDA). As a result, some hormonal control mechanisms, especiallycarbohydrates, proteins, nucleic acid metabolism, are influenced. In this study, we aimed toinvestigate the effect of IDA on serum lipid profile.Method: Files of 30 patients with IDA and 30 healthy people , whoconsulted to internal medicine and gastroenterology clinic in Namık Kemal University Facultyof Medicine, were scanned. The lipid and blood parameters of these people as well as theirdemographics were recorded.Results: While serum total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels were markedlylower in IDA cases than in controls, serum triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) andvery low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) levels did not differ in patients with IDA compared withthe control group.Conclusion: It was observed that serum total cholesterol and LDL levels, whose main contentis cholesterol, were decreased in IDA. We consider that reduction of iron levels changescholesterol metabolism

Demir Eksikliği Anemisi Hastalarında Serum Lipid Düzeylerinin Değerlendirilmesi

Abstract

Amaç: Demir eksikliği anemisi (DEA) sırasında demir miktarındaki azalma ile birlikte birçokmetabolik yol etkilenmektedir. Karbonhidrat, protein nükleik asit metabolizmaları başta olmaküzere bazı hormonal kontrol mekanizmaları da bundan etkilenmektedir. Çalışmamızda DEA’ninserum lipid profiline etkisini araştırmayı amaçladık.Gereç ve Yöntem: Namık Kemal Üniversitesi Araştırma ve Uygulama Hastanesi iç hastalıklarıve gastroenteroloji kliniğe başvurmuş ve DEA tanısı alan 18-60 yaş arası 30 hasta ve 30 sağlıklıkişiye ait dosya taraması yapıldı. Bu kişilerin demografik bilgileri ile birlikte lipid ve diğer kanparametreleri düzeyleri kayıt edildi.Bulgular: DEA hastalarının serum total kolesterol ve düşük yoğunluklu lipoprotein (LDL)düzeyleri kontrollere göre anlamlı olarak düşerken, serum trigliserid, yüksek yoğunluklulipoprotein (HDL) ve çok düşük yoğunluklu lipoprotein (VLDL) düzeylerinde ise anlamlı birdeğişiklik olmamıştır.Sonuç: DEA’nde serum kolestrol düzeyleri ile birlikte ana içeriği kolestrol olan LDLdüzeylerinin de azaldığı görülmüştür. Demir mikarındaki azalmanın kolesterol metabolizmasınıdeğiştirdiğini düşünmekteyiz
