TÜRKİYE’DE DIŞ TİCARET AÇIKLIĞININ CO2 EMİSYONU ÜZERİNE ASİMETRİK ETKİSİ: DOĞRUSAL OLMAYAN ARDL YAKLAŞIMI

Abstract

THE ASYMMETRIC EFFECT OF FOREIGN TRADE OPENNESS ON CO2 EMISSIONS IN TURKEY: NONLINEAR ARDL APPROACH

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the effect of foreign trade openness on carbon dioxide emissions in Turkey. The existence of the said relationship was investigated for the 1987-2020 period. In addition to foreign trade openness, energy consumption and GDP variables are also included in the model. The presented model was analyzed with the nonlinear ARDL approach. The findings show that changes in energy consumption also affect carbon dioxide emissions in the same direction. Similarly, it shows that changes in GDP affect carbon dioxide emissions in the same direction. However, it was concluded that an increase in the foreign trade openness reduces carbon dioxide emissions. On the other hand, it has been concluded that a decrease in the foreign trade openness also reduces carbon dioxide emissions. However, a decrease in the foreign trade openness has a greater effect on carbon dioxide emissions than an increase.
