Modeling and Optimization of Yield Strength and Uniform Elongation of AA7075 Thin Plate During Surface Grinding

Abstract

Aluminum 7075 (AA7075) thin plates were ground according to a design of experiment schedule, and their yield strength and uniform elongation were assessed using a DI-CP/V2 servo-hydraulic testing machine. The influence of table speed, feed, and grinding depth on the mechanical responses was examined, and regression models were created using Minitab 2021. The findings indicated that grinding depth was the most critical factor affecting both yield strength (p = 0.000) and uniform elongation (p = 0.015). An increase in grinding depth improved yield strength but decreased uniform elongation. Table speed and feed were found to be statistically insignificant for both responses. Interaction effects were largely insignificant, indicating a mainly linear relationship between the process parameters and mechanical properties. The regression model for yield strength demonstrated strong predictive capability (R² = 77.54%, R²ₐdⱼ = 74.68%), while the model for uniform elongation exhibited moderate effectiveness (R² = 52.17%, R²ₐdⱼ= 27.57%), highlighting the complexity of elongation behavior. Multi-response optimization determined ideal conditions at a moderate table speed (15 spm), high feed (5 mm), and high grinding depth (1.0 mm), resulting in a composite desirability of 0.624. These results illustrate that managing grinding depth is essential for optimizing the yield strength and uniform elongation of Aluminum 7075 thin plates.
