The concept of “Nusantara” in Indonesian geopolitics

Abstract

In this study, the concept of Nusantara, which has an important place in Indonesiann geopolitics, has been tried to be examined by using qualitative research methods. Firstly this concept formed by indoctrinating the enlargement policy in terms of geopolitics has been examined from etymological and semantic perspectives. Historically, the concept of Nusantara, meaning other or outer islands, first assumed a central role during the Majapahit Kingdom. It is seen that the concept came to the fore in the post-independence period again. In other words, for Indonesia, which is strategically located in the Asia-Pacific region, and the concept of Nusantara performs a unifying function against internal and external centrifugal forces in the establishment of its geopolitical integrity and national security. In this context, the Djuanda Declaration (Wawasan Nusantara), which was announced in 1957, has been representing an important stage in the implementation of the concept. Today, within the framework of Indonesian geopolitics, the concept of Nusantara maintains its importance in the context of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD) and AUKUS organizations, which were created to contain China in the Asia-Pacific region.

Endonezya jeopolitiğinde “Nusantara” kavramı

Abstract

Bu çalışmada Endonezya jeopolitiğinde önemli bir yer teşkil etmiş olan Nusantara kavramı niteliksel araştırma yöntemleri kullanılmak suretiyle incelenmeye çalışılmıştır. Jeopolitik açıdan genişleme siyasetinin doktrine edilmesiyle oluşturulmuş olan Nusantara kavramı öncelikle etimolojik ve semantik açılardan irdelenmiştir. Tarihsel olarak bakıldığında “diğer ya da dış adalar” anlamında kullanılan Nusantara kavramı ilk kez Majapahit Krallığı döneminde merkezi bir rol üstlenmiştir. Kavramın bağımsızlık sonrası dönemde yeniden ön plana çıktığı görülmektedir. Bir başka ifadeyle Asya-Pasifik bölgesinde stratejik açıdan eksen konumda bulunan Endonezya için Nusantara kavramının, bu ülkenin jeopolitik bütünlüğünün ve ulusal güvenliğinin tesisinde iç ve dış merkezkaç kuvvetlere karşı birleştirici bir fonksiyon icra ettiği görülmektedir. Bu çerçevede özellikle 1957 tarihinde ilan edilen Djuanda Deklarasyonu’nun (Wawasan Nusantara), kavramın uygulamaya konulmasında önemli bir safhayı temsil ettiği görülmektedir. Günümüzde Endonezya jeopolitiği çerçevesinde Nusantara kavramı, Asya-Pasifik bölgesinde Çin’in çevrelenmesi amacıyla oluşturulan Dörtlü Güvenlik Diyaloğu ve AUKUS gibi örgütlenmeler bağlamında önemi korumaktadır.
