Year 2014, Volume: 41 Issue: 1 - Volume: 41 Issue: 1, 9 - 19, 01.02.2014

Abstract

Aim; The investigation of the repeatability of acoustic pharyngometry technique and lateral cephalometric films and the present the advantages and the disadvantages of the two techniques. Methods : Two lateral cephalometric films and acoustic pharyngometry measurements were taken from 20 healty adult subjects in a week period. The acoustic pharyngometry measurements were done with cephalostate, in natural head position and orthoposition in order to prevent the negative effect of head, shoulder and tongue position and to provide standardization. Lateral cephalometric films were taken in the some conditions. The repeatability of angular, linear and area measurements derived from lateral cephalograms and the volume of analysis segment volume , mean pharyngeal cross sectional area mean area , minimum pharyngeal cross-section area min. area and minimum distance min dist derived from acoustic pharyngometry were investigated. Results : The angular measurements r = 0,99, r = 1; p < 0.001 , linear measurement and area measurements r = 0,99; p < 0,001 derived from lateral cephalogram were found to be repeatable. Analysis segment volume and mean pharyngeal cross-sectional area r = 0,96 p < 0.001 , minimum pharyngeal cross – section area r = 0,98, p < 0.001 and minimum distance r = 0,99, p < 0.001 derived from acoustic pharyngometry measurements were found to be repeatable. Conclusion : The acoustic pharyngometry technique and the lateral cephalometry were found to be repeatible when the measurement were done with cephalostate, in natural head position and orthoposition
