The Impact of Symptoms on Quality of Life in Individuals with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

Abstract

Objective: This study is aimed to evaluate the relationship between symptoms and quality of life in patients diagnosed with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). Methods: The study was descriptive and cross-sectional. 232 patients who have BPH in the study. The data was collected from patients previously diagnosed with BPH between June 2024 and October 2025 using The Demographic Characteristics Questionnaire, The International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), and The Quality of Life in Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (QUALIPROST) tools. Results: The mean age of the participants was 62.89±9.44 years, and it was found that 45.7% of them had been experiencing lower urinary tract symptoms for two years or more. The mean total IPSS score of the patients was 13.77±6.44, while the mean total QUALIPROST score was determined to be 22.57±10.59. A moderate negative correlation was identified between the IPSS and the quality of life score in BPH patients. Conclusion: BPH has been effective fo the quality of life. Identifying patient-specific quality of life is crucial in treatment selection and follow-up.
